One Hit 2006

The RAFFU Military Anniversary Tournament (One Hit Epee) was held, by kind permission of the Commandant of DCAE, Air Commodore S R Sims OBE BSc CEng MRAeS DLUT RAF, at RAF Cosford on Saturday 23 Sep 06.

Due to some administrative problems the turn-out was massively down on previous years. However 15 fencers competed in 5 teams to contest the trophies.

Individual. The individual competition was a one horse race from the start, with Pte Francois Louw from the Army taking on all-comers to take the Seletar Cup. After an extremely entertaining competition though, runner-up position went to the oldest competitor in the field, Dr Austin Moore, with John Carleton in 3rd place.

Team. In the team event, the dominance of Francois coupled with some good performances from his team mates ensured that the Army also took the Charles Mott Memorial Trophy; winning every match. The team of Austin Moore, Doug Renton-Cooper and Cpl Skippy Hosking held out to take 2nd place, with Lt Cdr Adrian Olliver, Sgt Phil McNulty and SAC Pete Dewey narrowly missing out in 3rd place.

Ladies. The Ladies event, like the men's, was decided almost from the start as Capt Jenni Goodman showed what she was made of, achieving 6th place overall as she finished as the highest placed female with 8 victories.

Veterans. Of the Veterans competing, it was Austin Moore's stunning performance achieveing 2nd place overall that gave him the Highest Placed Veteran title with a highly respectable 11 victories.

Invitational Team. The Invitational Team event was an exciting competition. As the Army and Veterans competed 1st, it was the Veterans who came out on top, delivering the Army team their 1st defeat of the day. The next match against the RAF was another close one, swinging both ways before the RAF finally managed to eke out a win. The match against the Army was to be the decider, and at first the RAF team pulled out a good lead. Unfortunately the Army then pulled it back to take the victory. This meant that each team had one victory, but it was the Veterans who took the International Military trophy on indicators.

Conclusion. The administrative problems experienced prior to this event almost created a disaster. Massive thanks have to go to SAC Brigette Morgan who stepped in at the last minute and made a huge effort to round-up as many fencers as she could. My thanks also to the Armourer, JT Gary Brailsford and the team of fencers for setting up the gym and ensuring the competition could run as smoothly as it did. Final thanks also go to the President of RAF fencing, Air Cdre Nick Kurth for making the presentations at the end of a highly enjoyable day’s fencing.
